Endbands which project beyond the height of the boards, because the boards are flush at head and tail with the edges of the bookblock. The height of the boards allow the endband cores to be taken onto the edges of the boards and to be sewn to them.

Projecting endbands are found in early Arabic, Armenian, Byzantine, Coptic, Georgian and Syriac traditions. In existing literature these are sometimes referred to as 'Greek-style endbands'.
