Note (en)
Note
The spine covering material, always parchment in recorded examples, has slots cut out of it to fit over the raised bands on the spines of inboard bindings. They are always used in conjunction with band covers and were an entirely Italian phenomenon, probably northern Italian, and in use throughout the sixteenth century and up to at least the 1670s. They were used to avoid having to mould the parchment covering over raised bands.
