Pieces of sheet material, most often coloured tanned skin, paper or parchment, adhered or otherwise attached to the outside of a binding, bearing information about the contents of the book (typically the author's name and the title), a press or shelfmark, a price, etc. The information may be given in manuscript, tooled or printed.
