The visit proposed for the period 30 August - 25 September has been confirmed by Father Symeon. As we are now making only three survey visits each year, there will be a team of 6 conservators for this visit, led by Andrew Honey (from the Bodleian Library, Oxford, his third visit), Nikolas Sarris (his sixth visit), Konstantinos Hatziantoniou (his second visit) and, for the first time, Nicole Gilroy (also from the Bodleian Library), Monika Gast (an independent conservator from Germany), and Caroline Scharfenberg (an independent conservator from Scotland). The main purpose of the visit is to continue the condition assessment of the bound manuscripts. All have confirmed that they are available at this time.
We wouldl also like during this visit to carry out the work to remove the manuscript fragments from the recess in the wall of Cell 31a. Jane McAusland, who repaired the Achtnames in June, 2001, and Maria Kalligerou will carry out this work. As the Italian Television company Rai Uno will be filming the conservation and digitising projects in the first week of September, the work on the fragments in Cell 31a will be carried out during the first week of the visit, 30 August to 4 September.
The team of six, together with Dr Nicholas Pickwoad, Jane McAusland and Maria Kalligerou will arrive in the monastery in the evening of Sunday 29 August and start work on Monday 30 August. Jane McAusland and Maria Kalligerou will leave on 4 September, Dr Pickwoad will leave on 9 or 10 September and the team on Sunday 25 September.
